Trailer Tent Insurance

Trailer tents are a quick and convenient alternative to camping, motorhomes and touring caravans.

They’re cheaper to buy than motorhomes, campervans and caravans and as anyone who goes camping frequently will tell you, the fact that they generally offer off-the-ground beds is an absolute godsend.

But the benefits don’t stop there. They’re smaller than campervans and generally offer more space and comfort than a normal tent, for example.

They’ve got a lower centre of gravity than most touring caravans so they’re pretty straightforward to tow.

In fact, there are so many reasons why trailer tents make sense that the more difficult decision is deciding which type you want.

What is a trailer tent?

A trailer tent is essentially a collapsible tent that sits within a trailer. They’re often called folding campers as a result.

From the outside, it’s difficult to tell a trailer tent apart from a large frame tent with a lack of pegs or tow bars the only obvious hints.

From the inside, it’s a little easier, with off-the-floor beds and more space, which gives the trailer tent away.

Different types of Trailer Tents

There are two main types of trailer tents on the market in the UK and as ever, each type has its advantages.

The most common type of trailer tent is a basic unit that uses the floor of the trailer for a sleeping area. The tent then covers the sleeping area and usually provides a decent sized awning out front.

Flip-top trailer tents are slightly different because the lid is also used as part of the flooring.

If you imagine opening a book and laying it out flat, that’s essentially how it works.

They’re really quick and easy to set up and don’t usually need pegging to keep secure.

Towing a trailer tent

Depending on the size and weight of the trailer tent you own, your standard driving licence should enable you to tow it legally.

If you passed your test after 19 January 2013, you can tow a trailer that weighs less than 750kg.

You can also tow a trailer that weighs more than 750kg as long as the total weight of your trailer and vehicle is less than 3,500kg.

If you’re a little bit older and passed your test before 1 January 1997 you can tow a trailer that weighs up to 750kg as long as the combined weight of your trailer plus car is no more than 3,500kg.

You can also tow a trailer over 750kg as long as the combined weight of your trailer and vehicle is no more than 3,500kg.
