Riding in the wet can be pretty grim. Riding in the cold can be scary. Riding in both at the same time is terrible. Unfortunately that’s par for the course in a British winter.
That’s why lots of riders pack their bikes away when the nights draw in and eagerly await the return of the sun in the shelter of a car.
If that sounds like you then Laid Up motorbike insurance could be the one for you.
What is Laid Up insurance?
Laid Up insurance is essentially Third Party Fire and Theft cover for a motorbike in storage.
It means that your bike is still covered against fire and theft when it isn’t being used.
That’s a good thing because it means that if your bike is damaged or stolen, you’re covered.
But it can also save you money.
How can Laid Up motorbike insurance save me money?
There are three approaches to keeping your bike in storage over winter or for any time you aren’t riding it:
1. Pay for cover all year round
The most obvious option is to cover your car for a full year. Unfortunately that means that you’re paying for cover that you don’t need if you’re not behind the handlebars.
2. Get short-term insurance and SORN your bike
If you only get short term insurance for the periods you are out on your motorcycle you will need to get a Statutory Off Road Notification (SORN) from the DVLA under the Continuous Insurance Enforcement (CIE) rules.
That means you will have to go through the process of completing the necessary V890 form, which is a bit of a hassle. Then you’ll need to re-tax your bike again when you want to get back out on the road.
You also run the risk of having an uninsured motorbike in your garage or storage. If that bike is stolen or damaged, you will not have any cover in place and will have to foot the bill for any repairs or replacements yourself.
3. Get Laid Up insurance
Laid Up motorbike insurance offers Third Party Fire and Theft insurance on your motorbike for a set period of time. This means if your motorbike is damaged or stolen while in storage, you can still claim from your insurer.
Laid Up motorbike insurance does not cover you to ride your bike during the time of your policy. That means it’s cheaper than a standard policy so you save money.
What about Continuous Insurance Enforcement (CIE) rules?
CIE rules say that your vehicle must be insured at all times. If it isn’t it needs to be SORN off the road.
Laid Up insurance means you don’t need to SORN your bike as you will have insurance.
The important thing to remember is you cannot ride your motorbike while your bike is covered with a Laid Up policy.
Laid Up policies can vary in length and you should inform your insurer how long you want the cover to run for and then, when that term ends, you must have insurance in place immediately afterwards, otherwise you’ll fall foul of CIE rules.
The good news is, whether you’re looking for Laid Up motorbike insurance, or a short-term policy once your Laid Up policy has lapsed, mustard.co.uk can help you over the phone.
