Quad Bike Insurance
A Quad bike is not a traditional form of transport and you don’t often see parents dropping the kids off at school on the back of them.
While they’re used on farms to haul goods over rough terrain, they’re also used for fun.
But however you use your Quad bike, you need insurance to cover your all-terrain adventures if you ever use them on UK roads.
Is Quad bike insurance different?
Like with most things in insurance, the type of cover you get depends on what you want and what your insurer provides.
That’s especially the case with Quad bike insurance because not all insurers will cover you and your Quad. In fact, lots of insurers will run a mile because of the risk associated with riding them.
If you have an approved, road legal Quad then you should be ok and you can get different levels of cover, as well as optional extras like breakdown and business use cover.

Quad bikes have specific rules if you’re going to be riding it on the road in the UK.
That’s because lots of Quad bike models have not met the required safety standards to be used on the road.
There are however lots of Quad bikes that have met the required safety standards and been approved for road use.
If your Quad bike is approved for road use then there a number of things you need to do before you can legally ride it on the road:
- You must register your Quad bike with the Drivers and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA)
- Your Quad bike must have front and rear number plates
- Your Quad bike must have a valid MOT if it is 3 years old or more
- You need to have a full car licence or a B1 category licence if it was issued before January 1997
- You must have at least Third Party insurance to ride on the road
If you’re riding your Quad bike off road you don’t need a licence, to tax or register it.
If you’re using an agricultural Quad bike then you need to go through the same steps as if you were riding it on public roads.
Why don’t some insurers cover Quad bikes?
Some insurers will not cover Quad bikes because of the perceived risks to both the bike and rider.
There are specialist insurers however who will insure your Quad bike however premiums are generally quite high because of that risk.
As a result, you’ll need to be prepared to pay a little bit more for your Quad bike than you would to insure a similar size moped, scooter or motorcycle.
Typical Quad bike restrictions
Finding Quad bike insurance isn’t always easy however there are still lots of insurers out there who will cover your Quad.
There are however some typical restrictions on Quad bike cover and if you don’t meet the minimum criteria, you’re going to struggle to get Quad bike insurance for road use.
Age is the biggest restriction. Most brokers will not insure riders under the age of 19 or 21.
Licence is the next biggest restriction and if you do not own a full licence you will struggle to get insured on your Quad bike.
