Motorhome insurance advice and FAQs

Do I need motorhome insurance?

Yes, you need to insure your motorhome by law – even if you only use it for a few weeks a year. This is because of Continuous Insurance Enforcement (CIE) which essentially means any vehicle used on UK roads must be insured.

The only time you don’t need cover, is if you have declared your motorhome off-road with what’s called a Statutory Off-Road Notification or ‘SORN’ for short.

If you’re caught without motorhome insurance then you could face a hefty fine or end up with penalty points on your licence.

What levels of cover are available?

While policies will vary according to the specific terms and conditions set out by each insurer, you’ll be able to choose from one of three levels of cover:

  • Third party only – typically the least expensive option and covers injury to other people and damage to their property but won’t pay to repair your motorhome if you’re involved in an accident.
  • Third party, fire and theft – includes everything you get with third party only but will also compensate you if your motorhome is stolen or damaged by fire.
  • Comprehensive cover – this is the highest level of cover you can get and includes third party, fire and theft and will also cover the cost of damage done to your motorhome.

Some comprehensive policies will also include features like personal possessions cover to protect the items you keep in your motorhome – for instance, a TV, bed linen, and kitchen essentials too.

Comparing motorhome insurance quotes means that you can be confident about exactly what is and isn’t covered so that there are no nasty surprises when you come to claim.

How much is motorhome insurance?

The cost of motorhome insurance in the UK really depends on a number of factors, for example:

  • Your age – if you’re a young driver, you could face higher than average premiums; this is because drivers under 25 are statistically more likely to be involved in an accident.
  • Your driving history – recent insurance claims can increase your premium so it’s a good idea to think carefully before claiming for minor bumps and scratches.
  • Whether you’ve modified your motorhome – modifications can increase premiums simply because alterations can raise repair costs. If you’ve made any modifications, you should always let your insurer know – not declaring them can invalidate your policy which means your insurer can refuse to pay out.
  • The miles you drive – if you only use your motorhome occasionally you can expect to pay less compared to someone who uses theirs on a regular basis as there’s less chance of being involved in an accident and making a claim.

Can I drive a motorhome on my car insurance?

The short answer is no – you can’t drive your motorhome on your car insurance policy. This is down to the fact that you’ll inevitably use your motorhome and car in different ways so you’ll need different policies to cover the specific activities you do in each.

For example, while you might only use your car to commute to work or go to the shops, you’re likely to drive your motorhome to busy holiday destinations as well as cook and sleep in it – all of which needs to be covered. Also, don’t forget – driving without appropriate insurance is also against the law.

How can I save on motorhome insurance quotes?

Bear in mind that any policy you choose should give you the cover you need, so before you just pick the cheapest motorhome insurance quote, take a close look at what it includes.

Cheaper policies may look like a bargain but you might find you need to add on extra features like windscreen or personal possessions cover which increases the cost. On the other hand, policies that initially look expensive could already include a number of features as standard making them better value for money.

That said, motorhome insurance doesn’t have to break the bank and there are several ways you can cut the cost without compromising on protection – for instance;

  • Pay premiums upfront – if you can, pay for annual cover in one lump sum to avoid monthly interest payments.
  • Be accurate with your mileage – overestimating the number of miles you do might be playing it safe, but it could unnecessarily increase your premium as more miles increases the risk of an accident and a potential claim.
  • Build up your no claims bonus – you’ll earn a discount for every year you drive without making an insurance claim, so it genuinely pays to drive carefully and considerately.
  • Secure your motorhome – the more secure your motorhome, the more likely you are to be rewarded with lower premiums. Keeping your motorhome in a garage or lockup is ideal but if that’s not practical, investing in an immobiliser is another effective security measure.
  • Join a club – in some cases, you could get a discount if you’re a member if a motorhome association or club so it’s well worth checking with insurers to see if this is something they offer.
  • Develop your driving skills – taking an advanced driving course could help lower your insurance but this is at the discretion of your insurer.

Of course, the quickest and easiest way to lower the cost of cover, is to compare motorhome insurance, which you can do right here at
