What is fully comprehensive car insurance?

Fully comprehensive car insurance, often referred to as fully comp car insurance is the highest level of cover that you can get for your vehicle. The alternatives are third-party only or third-party, fire and theft cover. They all offer different levels of cover and the right policy for you might not be suitable for someone else.

  • Fully comprehensive: includes third-party cover and third-party, fire and theft cover. Most policies will also protect you as the driver and can pay out for damage to your own car if you are in an accident. Your insurance policy also covers damage you cause to another person, their vehicle, or their property.
  • Third-party: covers injury and damage to other people. It won’t pay to repair your car after an accident. This is the minimum level of cover you can have by law.
  • Third-party, fire and theft: includes third-party only cover and will compensate you if your car is stolen or damaged by fire.

If you have fully comprehensive insurance, you will be able to claim on your insurance if you have an accident, even if you are at fault.

What does comprehensive car insurance cover?

It’s important to bear in mind that policies vary depending on the insurer’s own terms and conditions and a comprehensive policy with one provider might not be exactly the same as another’s.

Generally, you can expect a typical comprehensive car insurance policy to cover:

  • Injury and damage done to other people and their property
  • Injury and damage to you and your car if you’re involved in an accident – even if the accident is considered your fault
  • Theft and vandalism to your car
  • Fire damage to your car.

When comparing your fully comp car insurance, you will see that some of the below might be automatically included in the policy. However, some insurers will charge an additional cost to add it to your policy.

Here are some of the extras you might see:

  • Breakdown cover
  • Legal cover
  • Courtesy car cover
  • Personal accident cover
  • Cover for driving abroad.

If you use mustard.co.uk to compare your car insurance, you will see the optional extras displayed clearly and simply alongside your quote, making it easy for you to see if they are included within the policy, or not.

Does fully comprehensive car insurance cover me to drive another vehicle?

This depends on the conditions set out in your insurance policy.

A few comprehensive policies include cover known as Driving Other Cars (DOC). If they do provide DOC cover it’s usually only on a third-party basis. That means if you drive someone else’s car and have an accident, the policy will only compensate the other driver or person involved; it won’t pay to repair the car you’re driving.

DOC cover used to be a regular feature in many comprehensive policies but that isn’t the case anymore. If in doubt, check with your insurer.

If you need to drive someone else’s car for a limited period, you may want to consider short-term car insurance. Alternatively, you could add yourself as a named driver to someone else’s policy.

How can I get cheap fully comprehensive car insurance?

Comparing comprehensive car insurance quotes is the quickest and easiest way to find great deals on cover but you can keep costs as low as possible by:

  • Paying for your policy upfront – paying by monthly instalments often means you pay more overall as interest fees will be added.
  • Increasing your voluntary excess – this can lower your overall premium but it still needs to be affordable because claims can’t go ahead until it’s paid.
  • Increasing security – keep your car as secure as possible to attract lower premiums.
  • Limiting your mileage – fewer miles means you’re less likely to be in an accident which can help keep insurance costs down.
  • Telematics insurance – if you are a young driver, or face higher premiums, you can use a black box to help reduce your car insurance. Find out more about telematics insurance here.

Comprehensive car insurance FAQs

Comprehensive vs third party, which is better?

Third party and comprehensive car insurance offer different levels of cover and the right policy for you might not be suitable for someone else.

Comprehensive insurance covers more events and crucially, will compensate you if your car is damaged. Based on that, it might be the best policy for you if your car is new or expensive and would cost a lot to repair.

Comprehensive cover can also give you greater reassurance that if something unexpected does happen, financial help is available. Plus, insurers may also include other features that boost your comprehensive car insurance coverage, for example:

  • Windscreen and breakdown cover.
  • European cover.
  • Personal possessions cover.

On the other hand, if your car is old, you may not want to spend money on a comprehensive policy as the cost of cover could be more than the cost of replacing the vehicle.

It’s worth pointing out that no matter what level of cover you choose, you should be able to add on extra features for a fee. Remember that comprehensive policies may already include other features as standard, so you won’t need to spend as much to enhance the policy.

Is comprehensive car insurance more expensive than third-party policies?

Although comprehensive car insurance covers more risks than third-party policies, they’re not always more expensive. In fact, some fully comp policies can be less than half the cost of a third-party only plan.

It might seem surprising and historically, third-party policies were generally cheaper. That changed because insurers noticed there were more claims from third-party policyholders compared to those with comp cover. As a result, insurers increased the premiums to balance out the cost of claims.

Remember though – insurers consider lots of different factors to work out your premium so while some drivers may find third-party only policies are cheaper, some might not.
