American car insurance FAQs

Can I get insurance for an American import car?

Yes, if you’ve got an imported American car, you’ll be able to buy insurance for it in the UK. But you’ll need to bear in mind that searching for American car insurance might not be as easy as searching for deals for UK-made cars as not all insurers will cover them.

Policies can be harder to find because imported cars are considered riskier to insure and some providers are reluctant to offer cover. This is often because imported cars have been made to different safety standards which don’t always align with UK regulations.

Does American car insurance in the UK cost more?

In most cases, yes – it will cost you more to insure your imported American car compared to one made for the UK market. This is down to a number of reasons, including:

  • Size – American cars are usually big and powerful, and this increased size and weight can lead to higher premiums.
  • Parts – parts can be hard to come by and potentially more expensive if they can only be sourced in the US.
  • Desirability – although they’re growing in popularity, American cars in the UK are still a rarity making them a target for thieves and vandalism.

How do I insure my American import car?

Insuring your imported car isn’t very different to insuring one made in the UK although you’ll be asked for more details about the car itself.

In terms of the level of protection available, again, this won’t be any different to other types of car insurance and you’ll need to choose between third-party only; third-party, fire and theft, and comprehensive insurance. On top of this, you’ll also be able to add on optional extras like legal expenses, and breakdown cover.

Before you insure your import, you’ll need to make sure it’s gone through the vehicle approval process and is registered in the UK.

Are there any other features my American car insurance should include?

If you’re making money by hiring out your car, you’ll need to consider specialist wedding car insurance as most policies won’t include this as part of an imported car insurance policy.

Similarly, if you’ve bought a modified American car, or are planning to modify yours, you’ll need your policy to reflect those changes.

In both instances, if you don’t have the appropriate cover, you risk invalidating the policy you have. Ultimately, that means your insurer can refuse to pay out if you make a claim.

How much should I insure my car for?

If you have an agreed value policy, you’ll be able to agree your car’s value with your insurer. These types of policies cost more but at least you’ll be compensated with an amount you feel reflects the true value of your car.

If you decide not to go for an agreed value policy, you may end up disappointed with the amount you receive if your car’s written off as insurers will base compensation on the current market value.

How to get cheap American car insurance quotes

Importing a car from America often means you pay more for insurance, but there are ways to keep costs down, including:

  • Pay for your policy upfront – paying in instalments can mean you pay more overall as interest might be added.
  • Increase your voluntary excess – doing this can lower your overall premium but you’ll need to pay it for a claim to proceed so it should still be affordable.
  • Increase security – if you can, keep your car in a locked garage or on a private driveway. If that’s not possible, investing in an immobiliser or security device can help.
  • Limit mileage – fewer miles usually means cheaper insurance as there’s less chance of being involved in an accident.
  • Join an accredited club – some insurers offer discounts if you’re a member of an official American car enthusiasts club.
  • Check if it’s a classic – if you’ve imported an American classic, you could benefit from classic car cover which often costs less.
